Dirk pulled off his most daring heist to date by sneaking into the Countess of Lleyawin's quarters and stealing her precious ring. Dirk is moving up in the Thieves' Guild hierarchy quickly, but spending most of his income on bribes.
Interesting trivia: The Count and Countess are spooners and sleep above the covers, as shown in the souvenir snapshot taken by Dirk as he hovers creepily in the dark over their sleeping forms.
Interesting trivia #2: The Count no longer owns any gold dishes.
Now a member of the Thieves' Guild, Dirk stands gazing back dramatically at the city of his prior imprisonment, now wearing an unattractive pair of plain tan trousers. Which is fine with Dirk -- he tends to operate from his strengths of stealth, skill, and rock star hair.
Dirk has managed to pull off a couple of special Guild heists, denuded Castle Bravil of all valuables, gained entrance to the Mage Guild (he wants that invisibility spell), and has managed to ignore the Main Quest without blinking.
Quest schmest. Let's go steal something.

Dirk, having been imprisoned for an unspecified crime, inadvertently makes friends with the Emperor, who is using Dirk's cell to escape via a secret passage while being hunted by mysterious cultists. Dirk follows the Big Guy out of the Imperial Prison, only to be present when Empie is killed. During his prolonged death scene, the Emperor-inator inexplicably gives Dirk a valuable amulet to take to Weynon Priory and a hidden heir. Something about a prophesy. Or whatever.
After the dramatic death scene, Dirk finds himself outside the Imperial Prison, penniless and poorly armed, as illustrated by this glorious Buffalo Shot.
Screw the Quest, let's go steal something. Let's start with some pants.
